Whackers Migrate to the Motor City in 2012

Associated Press

SPRING, TX – In a short press conference this afternoon, GM Jason Dyniewski announced that the Whackers franchise is making the move to the Motor City. Starting in the 2012 ABA season, the Motor City Whackers will play their home games in Comerica Park.

The owner offered the following summary, “We really enjoyed our previous stay in the midwest [Busch Stadium from 2004-2010]. Our franchise was built on a down-to-earth attitude…and we have been seeking an opportunity to bring baseball back to the great fans of that region.”

In an interesting parallel, the recent history of the Whackers has followed an oddly similar track as the fortunes of Detroit. On two occasions, the team has experienced the highs of good fortune [2004 and 2010 championships] followed by periods of downturn [sub-par seasons following each title run]. The Whackers front office looks forward to the challenge of helping revitalize Detroit and it’s surrounding suburbs by bringing championship baseball to the area.

Much like the sculpted fist of Joe Louis (pictured at the top of the article), the Whackers look to Comerica Park as a springboard to punch the rest of the league in the mouth. However, to dispel any rumors to the contrary, officials have already stated that the team will not engage in any other types of fisting when the Noodlers visit later this season.

2010 ABA Playoff Review

That’s why they play the games! The Busch Whackers claimed the 2010 ABA trophy after a 4-2 series win over a strong Camden Crazies squad. The Whackers won the trophy with a surprising offensive outburst early and just enough pitching late in the series. In the pivotal Game 6, the Crazies looked to be on the verge of forcing a Game 7 at home when the Whackers tied the game in the top of the ninth and finally broke through with two runs in the 11th inning to win 6-4.

The entire Whackers organization was ecstatic with the turn of events as this championship match-up clearly favored the powerful Crazies roster on paper. After going up two games to none, the Whackers looked to be playing with house money. However, the Crazies would rally back and nearly forced a Game 7 at home. Crazies management was understandably disappointed with the results but they are a class organization and will return primed for another title run in 2011.

This is the second ABA title for Busch Whackers owner, Jason Dyniewski, with his first trophy coming back in 2004. Additionally, this is the fourth title in the past five years to be claimed by an ABA owner from the Dyniewski family coaching tree.

Baseball Returns to Las Vegas!

Dateline: Las Vegas, Nevada
March 29, 2010

“We did it! We finally did it!” boasted the ecstatic mayor of Las Vegas after inking the deal that brings ABA baseball back to town after a dry spell of 10 years. “We felt terrible losing the Hoover Dammits after the 1999 season. Our die-hard fans never turned on the team, instead following their adventures (and misadventures) as the Ural Fools, and then the Statesboro Blues. But now they’re back! The Dammits are back! We could not be happier”.

“We have never lost touch with our roots, and always held out hope that a deal would get done and we could return the team to the site of our early glory and our fabled triple Championships of 1994, 1996, and 1997” claimed a beaming Jim Molinelli, Dammits owner and Managing General Partner. “To be fair, we loved our time in Statesboro, Georgia. We felt like we gave that area and those fans everything we had. We went to the Championship game in 2005 and 2007, made the playoffs in two additional seasons, and only due to quirky arcane rules of the ABA, were left out of the playoffs in two more seasons even with a top 4 team”.

“So, although we had a real good run as the Statesboro Blues, we’re thrilled to move back to Vegas and don the pinstripes of one of the most famed ABA franchises ever” claimed Molinelli. “We’ve just inked a new stadium deal, and will be playing in Land Shark Stadium for the foreseeable future. I guess they would have to be land sharks if we’re playing here in the desert. Still, we could not be happier for the fans of Hoover Nation”.

“We’re on the precipice of a new era in club history. What better way to start this chapter than a return to glory. A return to our roots. A return to Las Vegas. A return to Hoover-ville. We’re BACK Dammits!”.

2007 ABA Playoff Review

The new-comer Blackjacks were the only ones left standing when the dust cleared from a playoff bracket that included three other former ABA champions. After quickly jumping out to a 3-0 series lead, the Blackjacks had trouble with a feisty Blues team that would not go quietly. A late score in the 11th inning of Game 6 ultimately proved the deciding measure as the Blackjacks finally tasted Championship Trophy glory after 11 years in the league! Congrats to all the teams on another exciting post-season.

Crazies Outlast Noodlers in Seven, Claim First ABA Trophy

Associated Press

CAMDEN YARD – In a tightly contested matchup of two balanced teams, the formidable Camden Crazies were able to outlast an equally talented Mississippi Noodler roster — in a series that went the distance — to claim their first-ever ABA Trophy in 2006. In a back-and-forth struggle, the Crazies utimately scratched out wins in games 6 and 7 at their home ballpark in what is sure to become an ABA instant classic. Congrats to both teams on a well-played series!!!

The win by Josh Dyniewski also makes the Dyniewski family now the winningest family in ABA history — based on the number of family members to have won an ABA trophy (Josh in 2006, Jason in 2004). This year’s result also continues a four year streak of trophy wins by either a Fernandes or Dyniewski. And sadly, the result also perpetuates the now nine year streak since the once mighty Dammit/Blues franchise has tasted ABA glory.

The Camden Crazies now carry the bragging rights of having their championship acknowledged on the front page of the ABA website for the next year.

Kansas City Strips Get Sent Up The River

LEAVENWORTH, Kansas (AP)

Due to the theft of a ballpark from Pittsburgh, the Kansas City Strips franchise has been sent up the Missouri River to Leavenworth, and will hereby be known as the Leavenworth Inmates. The Strips were found to be in violation of interstate commerce laws by moving the PNC Ballpark from Pittsburgh to Kansas City. The Inmates will be loaned out on furlough, and will play their games at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC, the murder capital of the world, and according to Mark Twain, the home of America’s only native criminal class (Congress).

Holy Cows to become Busch Whackers

AP – Heartland, USA

Officials of the Heartland Holy Cows franchise have filed the necessary paperwork with the League Office in order to change their team name to the Busch Whackers for the 2006 season and beyond. There are no plans to re-locate to another ballpark so the Busch Stadium faithful will continue to enjoy that unique brand of baseball that they have become accustomed to.

While some will accuse this franchise of yet another name change, management felt that a move at this time was good for several reasons:

(1) – While assuming the Holy Cows moniker for two seasons the franchise paid its respects to Heartland baseball history (Harry Caray) while also providing championship-caliber play which resulted in the 2004 ABA Trophy. With the ugly specter of last season’s forgettable performance coupled with looming expansion the team felt it was best to get off to a fresh start.

(2) – Changing to the Busch Whackers provides ample marketing opportunites along with solidifying the team’s physical location for years to come. Owner and GM, Jason Dyniewski, felt it particulary appropriate to field a team called the Whackers in the same division as other notable franchies as the 69ers, Noodlers and — given the publicity of Brokeback Mountain — the Rustlers.

(3) – While the Holy Cow was fan friendly, team advisors believe that the Whacker moniker will appeal to a younger crowd as well as generate a buzz at the Monday morning water cooler talk.

The team is attaching a sample of the new Whacker logo along with this communication. As you will see, the logo retains a classic, throwback look that continues a Heartland tradition of paying homage to the many historical aspects that make our game of baseball so rich.

While the name may have changed, the fundamental principles that drive this organization have not. The Whackers will be a force to reckon with — both on and off the field of play.
