Ballpark: Safeco Field
Safeco Field's one-of-a-kind retractable roof is designed to cover, but not enclose the ballpark, and preserve an open-air environment. A natural-grass custom blend of four types of Kentucky bluegrass and two kinds of perennial ryegrass make up the field. This combination was selected to provide the optimal playing surface for the athletes, the retractable roof and the Northwest climate. Safeco Field is one of the most sustainably operated ballparks in MLB. The Mariners recycle more than 70 percent of all waste generated during a game and have reduced consumption of water, electricity and natural gas significantly since 2006, giving Safeco Field the lowest "energy intensity" among MLB ballparks, according to team officials.
